FEATURED PROJECT

Gerald Desmond Bridge

About This Project

As part of the landmark Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project at the Port of Long Beach, Axia Electric, a Shimmick Company, performed critical electrical work in support of bridge operations and infrastructure systems. Axia’s responsibilities included power distribution and control systems for lighting, traffic management, and monitoring infrastructure along the 8,000-foot-long cable-stayed bridge and its elevated approach viaducts.

The team installed conduit systems and service panels to support roadway and architectural lighting, including fixtures along the pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Electrical infrastructure was integrated with Caltrans standards to ensure long-term maintainability and operational consistency. Axia also provided support for temporary power systems throughout staged construction, contributing to the safe and efficient execution of work within one of the nation’s busiest container ports.

As the first major highway cable-stayed bridge in California and the second tallest of its kind in the U.S., the project required precise coordination across multiple disciplines. Axia’s electrical scope played a key role in ensuring the functionality and safety of the finished structure.
